Andrew and I picked up a pair of bicycles the other day and have been loving having that bit of extra freedom to explore. It took us about 2 days to get everything sorted and adjusted properly. We were both quite glad to have done our bike mechanics course since it saved us quite a bit on hiring a mechanic. The gears are all adjusted and the brakes aren't rubbing anymore. We have disk brakes for the first time, which took some tinkering to get working properly.
Our first ride we went down to 90 mile beach and rode along the beach. I figured if the sand is hard enough for cars, it should work for bikes! It was an awesome ride and great fun. It was harder than riding on pavement though since the sand slowed us down. No coasting!
We are both looking forward to more rides and more exploring. It should be useful when we get jobs too! Means we can leave the campervan parked at the campground and ride our bikes to work.
Today we went for our first longer ride; 8 kilometers! We had intended to ride to the lake for a swim since it was a beautiful warm day. We took the forestry roads through the nearby park, which was a really nice ride. Unfortunately, I'm guessing we missed a turn somewhere because we also missed the lake! Our road slowly faded away until we found a fence and rolling green hills. We back-tracked, tried a few different turns, and eventually gave up. We followed our ears to the ocean! Rode through the sand dunes and then down a very steep dune onto the beach. By this time we were much too warm so we left our bikes on the sand and ran into the ocean to cool down. Such a nice swim! Then we rode back on the beach, which was easier now that our bikes are properly tuned.
