What I Miss From Canada

Andrew and I have been in New Zealand for nearly 3 months now and it is awesome! However...it isn't home. There are a number of things from Canada that we really miss and some of them seem rather strange.

First and foremost of course, we miss our family and friends, but we expected that. It is always difficult not seeing or talking to the people you love.

Here are the things we really didn't expect to miss from home:

Junk Food
Most things in New Zealand are of similar price to home. Unless you want junk food. Soda, chips, chocolate, and such cost significantly more here! The highest I have seen was $4 for a liter of Coke. Pepsi products can't be found here at all.

Inexpensive Entertainment
Apart from this being a beautiful country, there might be a reason that most people in New Zealand seem to do a lot of tramping. Buying a blu-ray will cost around $40, whereas going to the movies will cost around $19 per person...before buying any snacks. Video games average around $100 each as well.

Certain Products
There have been a number of products from home that we have found that we miss and simply can't find here, including:

  • Frank's hot sauce
  • GOOD BBQ sauce
  • GOOD maple syrup
  • Solid deodorant/antiperspirant - everything here is a spray
  • Decent feminine supplies
  • Normal tasting beef
  • Coppertone sunscreens
  • Most salad dressing flavours - we can get avocado garlic, ceasar, or balsamic
  • Raisin Bran - Sultana bran just doesn't taste the same

Good internet
Perhaps it is just that we have been WWOOFing or in the Far North, but the internet has been about the same speed as dial up. Or, if we have a good speed, we are limited on data. We are accustomed to being aware of how much data we use on our phones, but being limited to 15 Gb for the month on the normal internet as well just seems strange.

SNOW
I'm sorry, but Santa in swim trunks is just wrong. It'll be interesting to have our first warm Christmas and I am definitely looking forward to a BBQ and maybe beach swimming!

Good things!
On the plus side, it has been amazing exploring this country. We have made some great friends and some great memories. It's been incredibly easy to find gluten free foods here; plenty of them are also dairy free, egg free, and soy free at the same time!
